WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Friday they would support the right deal for more COVID-19 discharge, but House of Representatives spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi must compromise to reach a final agreement. In fact, Mnuchin has sometimes skilfully used his tolerance. As a conventional free distributor for most of his career, he has mostly worked with Trump`s Chinese hawk. But at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires in 2018, Mnuchin also helped convince Trump to abandon a plan to raise tariffs and instead accept a trade peace with China, paving the way for a tentative trade deal in January. Robert Lighthizer, Trump`s U.S. trade representative, himself a Chinese hawk, goes so far as to say that Mnuchin is one of the three greatest finance ministers in American history. “You obviously have Hamilton,” Lighthizer says, “and you have gallatin,” which refers to Albert Gallatin, who served as finance minister under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
“Who else do you have?” However, in the doubts of Trump`s first term, even many former critics of Mnuchin acknowledge that he could be the most effective – and sometimes the most indispensable – member of the Trump administration. Mark Warner, a Democratic senator from virginia, says that after working with Mnuchin on the CARES Act, he regrets voting against his confirmation in 2017. “I think the story will be well treated by Minister Mnuchin,” Warner told me. Mnuchin is one of the few senior officials in the Trump administration to be respected by international organizations and U.S. allies. “He`s a good broker,” says Christine Lagarde, who was managing director of the International Monetary Fund and is now president of the European Central Bank. Bruno Le Maire, the French finance minister, tells Mnuchin that relations between the United States and Europe are no worse than they are today. “He`s always trying to find ways, compromises, agreements,” says Le Maire. His continued presence in Trump`s cabinet is seen by some as a saving grace. Barney Frank, a former Massachusetts Democrat and chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said, “Mnuchin can do better than anyone else in government the argument “After me, the flood.” Obviously, we`ve identified the Republicans in the Senate who are most likely to vote for it,” Meadows said Sunday on CNN. “I made a commitment from Leader McConnell to be prepared to give it and pass it if we have an agreement,” he said, referring to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Peosi remains “optimistic” about reaching an agreement before election day, Hammill said. But with next Tuesday`s election and the expected withdrawal from the Senate late Monday, the lack of an imminent deal has largely erased the prospects for a bill that will be written, passed and signed by President Trump by November 3. WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. House of Representatives spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin failed to agree on Friday on a plan to revive COVID-19, while the Senate`s top Republican expressed doubts that Congress would act before the November 3 vote. While both sides said they were still working on a deal Monday night, both Pelosi and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows spoke coolly about the other side`s priorities at the time of the other side`s priorities, a sign that the signal of no deal could begin quickly if the deadline is missed Tuesday. Optimism about a possible deal pushed up U.S. stock prices and laid the groundwork for the weekly market`s second gain on Wall Street. “Pelosi thinks Mnuchin wants a deal,” the senior Democratic House official told me in September, “and he`s in a lot more of a hurry than Meadows to accomplish something.” Mnuchin insists That Meadows is not the problem.
